Maria Al Qibtiyya (R.A.)

Maria al-Qibtiyya (R.A.) was the slave of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and certainly given the same title of respect as the Prophet’s (Peace be upon him) wives ‘Umm-e-al Muminin’ ‘Mother of the Believers’ (R.A.). Maria (R.A.) was born in Upper Egypt of a Coptic father and Greek mother and moved to the court of the Muqawqis when she (R.A.) was still very young. She (R.A.) arrived in Medina to join the Prophet’s (Peace be upon him) household just after the Prophet
(Peace be upon him) returned from the treaty with Quraish which was contracted at Hudaybiyya. Maria (R.A.) gave birth to a healthy son in 9 AH, the same year that his (Peace be upon him) daughter Zaynab (R.A.) died, and the Prophet (Peace be upon him) named his (Peace be uponhim) new son Ibrahim (R.A.), after the ancestor of both the Jews and the Christians, the Prophet (A.S.) from whom all the Prophets (A.S.) who came after him (A.S.) were descended. Unfortunately, when he (R.A.) was only eighteen months old, Ibrahim (R.A.) became seriously ill and died. Even though he (Peace be upon him) knew that his (Peace be upon him) small son would go to the Garden, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) could not help shedding some tears. When some of his (Peace be upon him) Companions (R.A.) asked him (Peace be upon him) why he (Peace be upon him) was weeping, he (Peace be upon him) replied, “It is my humanness.”
As Ibrahim’s (R.A.) body was being buried, the sun was eclipsed and it grew dark and gloomy. Some people thought this was connected with Ibrahim’s (R.A.) death, but the Prophet (Peace be upon him) soon clarified this. “The sun and the moon are two of Allah’s signs,” he (Peace be upon him) said, “They are not eclipsed because of anyone’s birth or death. When you see these signs, make haste to remember Allah in prayer.” Although the kafirun (Non Muslims) used to mock the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) because he (Peace be upon him) had no sons, and say that he (Peace be upon him) was ‘cut off’, Allah made it clear in the following Surah that the station of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was far above that of any other man;

In the name of Allah, The Merciful, the Compassionate: Surely We have given you Al Khawsar, so pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice. Surely he who mocks you is the one cut off. (Quran 108:1-3)

Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets and Allah has knowledge of all things. (Quran 33:40)

Maria (R.A.) was honored and respected by the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and his (Peace be upon him) family and Companions (R.A.). She (R.A.) spent three years of her (R.A.) life with the Prophet (Peace be upon him), until his (Peace be upon him) death and died five years later in 16 AH. For the last five years of her (R.A.) life, she (R.A.) remained a recluse and almost never went out except to visit the grave of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) or her (R.A.) son’s grave. After her (R.A.) death, Umar bin Khattab (R.A.) led the prayer over her (R.A.) and she (R.A.) was buried in Al Baqi.
